문장을 간결하게 만드는 법을 소개한다. 문장을 간결하게 만다는 것은 불필요한 것을 삭제함으로써, 필요한 것이 돋보이도록, 잘 이해되도록 하는 작업이다.

예를 들어서 다음 문장을 보자.

In my personal opinion, it is necessary that we should not ignore the opportunity to think over each and every suggestion offered.

이 문장을 다음과 같이 바꾸어 보자.

We should consider each suggestion.

아래 문장이 간결하여, 핵심내용을 효과적으로 독자에게 전달하고 있다.

Concise한 글을 쓰는 법

의미 없는 단어를 삭제해라

몇몇 단어들은 불필요하게 무의식적으로 사용되는 경우가 있다. 대표적으로,

kind of, actually, particular, really

certain, variouis, virtually

individual, basically, generally, given, practically

와 같은 단어가 있다.

원문: Productivity actually depends on certain factors that basically involve psychology more than any particular technology.

개선: Productivity depends on psychology more than on technology.

같은 말을 반복하는 단어를 삭제해라

full and complete, hope and trust, any and all

true and accurate, each and every, basic and fundamental

원문: First and foremost, we have to do it.

개선: First, we have to do it.

다른 단어에 의해 암시되는 단어를 삭제해라

이 카테고리에 속하는 예시는 다양하기 때문에, 의미적으로 찾아야 한다.

첫번째 카테고리는, 단어가 다른 단어의 의미를 가지고 있는 경우이다.

terrible tragedy, various different, free gift

basic fundamental, future plans, each individual

원문: Do not try to predict future events that will completely revolutionize society.

개선: Do not try to predict revolutionary events.

두번째 카테고리는, 단어가 다른 단어의 카테고리에 들어가는 경우이다.

원문: During that period of time, the membrane area became pink in color and shiny in appearance.

개선: During that period, the membrane became pink and shiny.

세번째 카테고리는, 단어가 다른 단어를 함축적으로 의미하는 경우이다.

원문: Imagine trying to learn the rules for playing the game of chess.

개선: Imagine to learn the rules of chess.

예를 들어서, 위의 예시에서는, Learn은 Trying을 수반하는 행위이며, Play the game of chess에서 chess는 게임이고, 게임은 playing하는 것이 당연하다. 따라서 함축적인 의미를 지니고 있는 Trying과 Playing the game을 모두 삭제할 수 있다.

구(Phrase)를 단어로 대체해라

때론 전체 구 혹은 절이 하나의 단어로 대체될 수 있는 경우도 있다.

원문: We must explain the reason for the delay in the meeting.

개선: We must explain why the meeting is delayed.

원문: Despite the fact that the data were checked, ...

개선: Even though the data were checked, ...

원문: We have to carefully go over what you have written to check ...

개선: We have to edit ...

부정적인(Negative) 표현을 긍정적인(Affirmative)표현으로 바꾸어라

not careful -> careless, not many -> few, not the same -> different

not often -> rarely, not allow -> prevent, not stop -> continue

만약 부정의 의미를 사용하는 것이 강조의 의미라면, 긍정적인 표현으로 바꾸면 강조의 의미가 사라짐으로, 바꾸면 안된다. 또한 부정의 의미를 가진 동사, 전치사, 접속사와 같은 표현을 not과 같은 표현과 써서, 이중 부정을 만드는 행위또한 하면안된다.

원문: Except when you have failed to submit application without documentation.

개선: Sumit yoiur documents.

또한 동명사와 부정형을 같이 써서도 안된다.

원문: There should be no submission...

개선: Do not submit...

불필요한 형용사나 부사를 삭제해라

형용사나 부사는 반드시 꼭 독자의 이해를 도울수 있는 경우에만 써라. 만약 불필요한 형용사혹은 부사가 있다면 삭제하라.

원문: Previous related work published by the Chinese researcher Yang shows a remarkable opportunity for the continuously growing trends in the size of the file system. In their broad and precise view, they propose a strict and limited way for restricting the size of the file system.

개선: Yang’s previous work highlights opportunities in growing file system sizes. They propose a strict method to limit file system size.
